2008 Mar 11 : In the wake of a 73-year-old Midwestern woman being sickened by lead-tainted dental work that was outsourced to China, consumers are being asked to inquire about the origins of their crowns, veneers, bridges and dentures. 2007 Aug 13 : Gilchrist & Soames recalls China-made toothpaste. Independent tests showed some samples contained diethylene glycol, a kidney and liver toxin and a central nervous system depressant. Gilchrist & Soames said it recalled toothpaste from hotels in Barbados, Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, Turks & Caicos, the United Arab Emirates, Britain and the United States, and asked hotels to destroy any remaining inventory. 2007 June 28 | The FDA placed these pond-raised products on its import alert because of concerns they might contain carcinogens or antibiotics not approved for seafood. No illnesses have been reported, the AP report said.

Diethylene glycol is used as a cheaper alternative to the thickening agent, glycerin.

Hazard: The substance is a central nervous system depressant and potent kidney and liver toxin.
